DIY TWINE LIGHT FITTING
While my parents were away for the weekend, my husband and I did a mini-makeover on a couple of their rooms. Part of the makeover was to cover up their ceiling lights (which had no fittings over them) so I decided to make my own.
Materials: Twine/String, Elmers Spray Adhesive, Balloon, Scissors, Glue & Water, Spray Paint (optional)
Working outside, suspend your blown up balloon so it hangs easily. Spray the balloon with some spray adhesive to give your twine something to stick to. Start wrapping the twine around the balloon, remembering to make it as random as possible, criss-crossing all over the place. Leave a wide enough ‘gap’ around the tied end of the balloon (dont wrap string here) so you have a hole to place your light bulb through. Once you’ve wrapped the twine around so it looks solid - spray a bit more adhesive on it (and for extra strenght you can ‘paint’ a mixture of glue & water to really get it solid).
Allow to dry overnight - test the strength by lightly pressing the twine - if it feels solid enough pop the balloon. You can keep it as is or spray paint it white (or any other colour). I held it to the celing with some hanging hooks either side of the light bulb, then using more twine- simply hung the light fitting from the hooks. IMPORTANT - I reccommend using a LED Light Bulb in this light fitting, as they doesnt get as hot as the old bulbs.
